Compress large movies to small chunks under 2GB for Surface RT and Pro with best video settings

Surface RT tablets only have half the advertised space available for consumers' use. If you buy a 32GB Surface RT, there's only 16GB available to store your stuff. On a 64GB Surface RT, only 46GB remain. The Surface Pro tablets are in the quite same situation. This is not good for people who are willing to store movies on the Surface device for viewing anywhere and anytime, because most often, the video files occupy a lot of spaces.

If you ever wanted to put large movie files as many as possible to your Microsoft Surface RT/Pro for entertainment during traveling or on public vehicles, yon can consider compressing these large movies to small chunks under 2GB to save space of your device. In that way, more movie files can be saved in the same storage space.

The short guide below shows the detailed steps on how to compress large movies to small chunks under 2GB for Surface RT and Pro:

Step 1: Launch Video to Surface RT/Pro Converter for Mac and add source video file into it by clicking “Add video” or “Add from folder” icon.

Step 2: After the video files are imported, click "Format" menu to select “Microsoft Surface Windows RT H.264 Video (*.mp4)” as target format under “Windows” profile column. Learn how to custom a suitable profile for your Microsoft Surface RT & Pro here.

Plus, you can click “Settings” button to open the “Profile Settings” windows to custom file quality by adjusting video and audio settings. Also, you can have a look at the estimated file size to make sure if the output file size will be compressed under 2GB.

Best settings for Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets
Video
Codec: h264
Size (pix): 1280*720 (720p quality)
Bit rate (kbps): 2,000
Frame Rate (fps): 24
Audio
Codec: aac
Sample Rate (hz) 48,000
Bit rate (bps): 128,000
Channels: Stereo
Tips:
1) If you prefer to get a file with much clearer image quality and do not mind generating a relatively large file size, you can change the video bit rate higher than 2,000 kbps. In general, the higher bit rate, the bigger output file size. You can monitor the estimated target file size to see if the final exported file size will exceed 2GB. If exceeding 2GB, simply adjust the video bit rate down to a lower value.
2) If you would like to experience 1080p quality on Surface Pro, you can set the video resolution at 1920*1080.

Step 3: Click “Convert” button to start shrinking large movies to small chunks under 2GB for Surface RT and Pro with best settings.

That's it! Once the conversion is completed, you are able to click “Open” button to get the generated files and simply transfer these MP4 files to your Microsoft Surface or Surface Pro for playback.

There is another method to directly split a large movie file into small files under 2GB by using Pavtube Video to Surface Transcoder for Mac.

To start splitting, check the file that you want to split, then choose the option “Split selected task”.

When the “Video Split” window pops up, tick off “Enable > Split file size (MB)”, and either enter the desired maximum size of each file chunk or choose an appropriate size from the available drop down option. In my case I entered 2,000 MB for each chunk of file. 2 GB is equal to 2,048 MB, so if you want your file size less than 2GB for playing on Surface RT or Surface Pro, just enter/choose the maximum size smaller than 2,048 MB.

Click “OK” to confirm and back to the main interface to click “Convert”. Pavtube Mac Video to Microsoft Surface Converter will convert the source file to your desired format with best settings and split it into several files smaller than 2GB with your desired file size.
